Formulas
How to calculate a raise
Two formulas cover both directions.
Raise percent to new pay
New pay = current pay × (1 + raise % ÷ 100)
$20.00 an hour with a 3% raise: $20.00 × 1.03 = $20.60 an hour. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $41,600 becomes $42,848 a year.
New pay to raise percent
Raise % = (new pay − current pay) ÷ current pay × 100
$50,000 to $55,000 a year: ($55,000 − $50,000) ÷ $50,000 × 100 =10%.
To move between hourly and annual pay, multiply or divide by hours per week × 52. A raise percent is the same in every unit; the dollar raise is not ($2,080 a year for each $1 an hour at 40 hours a week).

FAQ
Questions about raises
How do I calculate a raise percentage?
Subtract the old pay from the new pay, divide by the old pay and multiply by 100. From $50,000 to $55,000 a year: ($55,000 − $50,000) ÷ $50,000 × 100 = 10%. Use the same unit for both figures: hourly with hourly, annual with annual.
How much is a 3% raise?
Multiply your pay by 0.03. On $20.00 an hour a 3% raise is $0.60 an hour, for new pay of $20.60. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is $1,248 more a year, $42,848 in total.
What is a good raise?
There is no legal or standard figure. Two comparisons are useful: the change in prices over the same period (a raise smaller than inflation buys less than the old pay did), and what the same job pays at other employers in your area. A promotion or a change of role is usually priced separately from an annual raise.
Does a raise keep up with the cost of living?
Compare your raise percent with the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes monthly, over the same twelve months. If prices rose by more than your pay, your pay buys less than before even though the dollar figure went up. This calculator does not include price data.
Is a minimum wage increase a raise?
For anyone paid below the new minimum, yes: from the effective date the employer has to pay at least the new rate. Workers already above it get nothing automatically, though some employers adjust nearby pay rates too. The table on this page lists the scheduled increases in our dataset with the percent and yearly dollar change for each.
