Questions
What is time and a half?
Time and a half is pay at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate: the regular rate plus half again. At $20.00 an hour it is $30.00. Federal law requires it for covered non-exempt employees after 40 h in a workweek.
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5, then by the overtime hours. 5 overtime hours at $20.00 pay $20.00 × 1.5 × 5 = $150.00.
What is time and a half on the federal minimum wage?
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, so time and a half is $10.88 and double time is $14.50. Most states set a higher minimum; see the table.
What is double time?
Double time is 2 times the regular rate. Federal law never requires it. In our dataset, California requires it for long days; elsewhere it is paid only by employer policy or contract.
Is time and a half required on weekends or holidays?
Not by federal law. Covered non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek; federal law sets no daily overtime and no weekend or holiday premium.
